When You NEED a Roadworthy Certificate in Victoria
In Victoria, you must have a current RWC for:
1. Selling a Car (VicRoads Requirement)
When selling a registered vehicle, you must provide the buyer with a valid Roadworthy Certificate.
2. Transferring Ownership of a Registered Car
Brands like Mercedes, BMW, Audi and Volkswagen typically use flexible intervals.
However, real-world Australian conditions (heat, stop–start traffic, dust) often shorten these intervals.
3. Re-Registering a Vehicle After It Has Lapsed
If the rego has expired, VicRoads requires an RWC before re-registering.
4. Clearing a Defect Notice / Red Sticker

When You Do NOT Need a Roadworthy Certificate
Victoria does not require an RWC for:
Selling an unregistered vehicle
